Manchester United has faced some tough times lately, and the pressure on coach Ruben Amorim is undeniable. After watching his team fall 3-0 to rivals Manchester City yesterday, the heat certainly turned up a notch. It’s a familiar story at Old Trafford these days, with questions always swirling around the manager’s future.
But an old face from United’s past, Edwin Van der Sar, has weighed in with some important thoughts. The former Red Devils goalkeeper hopes Amorim gets the backing he needs from the club’s leadership. Van der Sar shared his perspective with reporters before a special Legends Charity Game at Alvalade.
“That loss was a bitter pill to swallow,” Van der Sar admitted. “But I really hope they can turn things around. I remember being right here four years ago with Ajax. We were watching a Youth League match, and Amorim was coaching Sporting then. We had a great chat. I truly hope he gets the full support he needs from the board.”
Another former United player, Michael Owen, also chimed in. He believes people need to give the current coaching staff more time. Owen stressed that the responsibility for the club’s struggles shouldn’t land squarely on just one person’s shoulders.
“Manchester United hasn’t been on solid ground for quite a while now,” Owen explained. “Think about it. Mourinho, Van Gaal, Solskjaer, David Moyes – none of them truly hit it big at United. That tells you it’s not simply the coaches’ fault.” He added, “Lots of things need to change and grow for improvement to happen. The club also needs patience and to stick with their manager. Everyone has to understand this is going to be a long haul.”
