Van Aert surrenders to Van der Poel: “He did an incredible sprint”

Mathieu Van der Poel and Wout Van Aert once again left us a historic duel between them during the men’s event of the Hoogerheide Cyclocross World Championships and that resulted in the victory of the Dutchman to achieve his fifth rainbow jersey on the mud.

A Wout Van Aert who, after the race, once again demonstrated the good relationship between the two despite their rivalry when he and Van der Poel shared a microphone on the Sporza set to analyze the race.

In his statements, Van Aert admitted that Van der Poel set a very difficult pace for him from the start and assured that his tactic was to beat the sprint, as well as regretting not having started earlier when Van der Poel launched the sprint at the finish line. “I am very disappointed that I did not win the race. From the first minute Mathieu put a lot of pressure on me. I was on the limit in the first half hour, so I was doomed to follow him the whole race. So I focused on the sprint because attacking him would not have been the best tactic. I prepared myself for a scenario where I was going to be second from the finish line. I got a little confused when I was in front. It’s part of the races. In summary, he might have had a better chance if he had sprinted right away. Two thumbs up to Mathieu for that incredible sprint he did.”
