The Movistar team has revealed early this Friday the team that this Saturday will seek victory in the Giro de Lombardia, the last monument of the 2021 cycling season and the last great race of a year that they intend to close in style.
For it Alejandro Valverde will start as leader of the ranks in search of victory in Bergamo. The Murcian seeks his first title in the Tour of Lombardy in a monument that still resists him after being second in 2013, 2014 and 2019 and that only Joaquim ‘Purito’ Rodríguez has been able to win for Spanish cycling in the 2012 and 2013 editions.
‘El Bala’ arrives in Lombardy in a great moment of form despite his fall in the Tour of Spain, as evidenced by his stage triumph and second place overall in the Giro de Sicilia and his tenth position in Milan-Turin, where despite the lack of competition rhythm he held out with the best until the final climb to Superga.
Valverde will be accompanied for this assault on the Giro de Lombardia by a powerful block that make up the Portuguese Nelson Oliveira, the Italian Davide Villella and the Spanish Antonio Pedrero, José Joaquín Rojas and Marc Soler, who will contest his last race with Movistar after seven seasons with the team before heading to UAE Emirates next season.
