ARTIGAS, URUGUAY – A former National Party deputy was sentenced to six months in prison with probation for usurpation of functions. As part of the sentence, she must complete two months of community service.

A hearing was held this Wednesday in the city of Artigas for the case of irregular overtime at the Municipality of Artigas. The hearing was a significant development in the ongoing investigation into alleged corruption and abuse of power at the municipality.

Former Deputy Resigns from National Party

Prior to the sentencing, Valentina Dos Santos resigned from the National Party, submitting a letter to the president of the Board of Directors, Macarena Rubio. She had already resigned from her seat as a deputy on Tuesday.

Mayor and Officials Sentenced for Failure to Report Irregularities

This Tuesday, the mayor of Artigas, Pablo Caram, was sentenced for the crime of failure by public officials to report irregularities or possible crimes in the public administration. Rodolfo Caram, the current director of Productive Development of the Municipality of Artigas, and his wife were also sentenced for a continuing crime of fraud. The prison sentence was replaced with probation.

Fraud Allegations Uncovered

Rodolfo Caram’s partner was accused of having charged 292 hours of overtime in one month, equivalent to more than 90,000 pesos. The sentencing marks a significant development in the ongoing efforts to root out corruption and abuse of power at the municipality.
