Valencia prepares for the Women’s Softball World Cup

The Softball World Cup lands in Valencia. The Turia River municipal baseball and softball field will become, from July 18 to 22, the setting for one of the biggest sporting events of the year. This is the highest international competition organized by the World Baseball and Softball Confederation (WBSC), which awarded the organization of this international event to the RFEBS (Royal Spanish Baseball and Softball Federation) in collaboration with the FBSFACV (Baseball, Softball Federation). and American Football of the Valencian Community.

Valencia will host the first phase of the WSWC in Group B, in which 6 national teams will participate: China, Cuba, the Netherlands, Puerto Rico, South Africa and Spain will face each other at the Turia River municipal baseball and softball field. It will be the 17th edition of the Women’s Softball World Cup, an international competition that began in 1965 and was presented for the first time on national territory. Spain will make its debut as organizer of an Absolute World Cup in this discipline.

Valencia launches a new competition format

This World Cup will be the first event to be held under a new competition system. The teams will play the Group Stage in Europe from July 11-26 in Fingal-Dublin, Ireland (Group A); Valencia, Spain (Group B); and Castions di Strada and Buttrio, Italy (Group C). The finals will take place in Italy in the summer of 2024. Under the new two-stage format, the World Cups are played over two consecutive years, with the Group Stage in the first year and the Finals the following year.

18 national teams will compete in the Group Phase divided into three groups and will play a total of 57 matches, among all the teams. The top two teams from each group will qualify for the finals, and at this early stage, each group will begin with a single round robin. The top four teams from the round robin will advance to the play-offs where the top two teams will meet for a spot in the Finals at stake. The loser of the first tiebreaker match will play the third vs. fourth place winner for second place in the Finals.

The city of Valencia will welcome leading figures of softball in its stadium on the Turia River like Maidelys Reyes, from Cuba; Britt Vonk, from the Netherlands or Aleshia Ocasio, from Puerto Rico.
