Using illegal tactics, Google fined billions of rupees

Bengaluru: The world’s most popular search engine company ‘Google’ has been sentenced to a fine of billions of rupees in India, Google has invested billions of dollars in India.

According to Indian media, Google was fined 161 million dollars (13 billion Indian rupees) for using illegal tactics to dominate the market in India.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) alleged in a statement on Thursday that Google is misusing its Android operating system license for several smartphones, web searches, browsing and video hosting services.

According to the report India has fined Google $16.19 million (over 35 billion Pakistani rupees) for alleged actions taken to maintain the dominance of its Android apps in several markets.

The sentence is a huge blow for the search engine company as Google has valued India for business and has invested billions of dollars there over a decade.

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) fined Google on October 20 after a three-and-a-half-year investigation.

The CCI said Google used its dominant position in online search and the app store for Android devices to protect its own apps like Chrome and YouTube and suppress rival apps.

The Competition Commission also ordered Google to change its approach for the Android platform. On the other hand, on October 21, Google released a statement saying that this fine is a huge blow to Indian consumers and businesses.

According to a Google spokesperson, Android has created opportunities for everyone and this operating system is supporting millions of successful businesses across the world, including in India.

The Competition Commission has ordered Google to cease and desist from such tactics, but Google has yet to respond to the fines or allegations made in India.

Google said that the decision is being reviewed on its behalf, after which steps will be taken in this regard.
