US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent says trade talks with China are making big progress.
The talks happened in Geneva, Switzerland, over the past two days.
Bessent was happy to say that the talks were very productive.
US Trade Representative Jamie Grer also spoke about the talks.
He hinted that the two sides might have reached a deal on Sunday.
“The President declared a national emergency and put tariffs in place,” Grer said.
“We’re confident that our agreement with China will help fix this situation.”
Grer added that reaching a deal quickly might mean that the differences between the two sides weren’t as big as thought.
When CNN asked the Treasury Department to confirm the deal, Bessent said details would be shared on Monday.
Before the talks, Trump officials tried to lower expectations.
They said the meeting was just a “good first step.”
Bessent had said earlier that his goal was to reduce tensions between the US and China after Trump imposed tariffs.
Trump said he was willing to lower tariffs on Chinese goods from 25% to 10%.
But it depends on Bessent.
The White House later said that China, which has tariffs on US goods at 20%, also needs to compromise for tariffs to be reduced.
