U.S. forces struck 90 military targets on Iran’s Kharg Island late Friday, deliberately bypassing the critical oil export infrastructure that anchors the nation’s economy. The massive bombing raid, confirmed by U.S. Central Command on Saturday morning, marks a severe escalation in the rapidly expanding 2026 regional war.
President Donald Trump announced the operation, stating the military “totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran’s crown jewel.” The strikes successfully destroyed missile bunkers and naval mine storage facilities, but the administration issued a stark ultimatum regarding the preserved energy terminals.
Trump warned that the decision to spare the oil facilities would be immediately reconsidered if Tehran attempts to disrupt the free passage of international shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
In immediate response to the overnight barrage, Iran’s joint military command threatened to attack the regional oil and energy infrastructure of any companies cooperating with the United States.
The strikes on Kharg Island represent the realization of a long-theorized U.S. military contingency. The island serves as the primary terminal for roughly 90 percent of Iranian oil exports, making it the absolute core of Tehran’s energy sector. The operation occurs weeks after the broader conflict between Israel, the U.S., and Iran erupted in late February. Violence has already spread across the region, prompting continuous troop movements and diplomatic alerts.
Concurrent with the bombing raid, the Pentagon ordered the deployment of 2,500 Marines and the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli to the Middle East. Energy analysts have issued immediate warnings that any further expansion of the conflict into Kharg Island’s operational oil terminals could trigger a drastic surge in global oil prices.
