US Hands Russia a Strategic Victory in Ukraine’s Battlefields

US Failure in Ukraine: A Consequence of Poor Policy Decisions

The ongoing conflict in Ukraine has exposed the shortcomings of the Biden administration’s policies, which have inadvertently contributed to the strengthening of Vladimir Putin’s forces. A thorough analysis by retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel Daniel Davis sheds light on the critical mistakes made by the administration, ultimately jeopardizing Ukraine’s position.

Assessing the Situation

General James Hecker, commander of the United States Air Forces in Europe and Africa, has painted a grim picture, stating that Russia has grown stronger and more capable since the invasion began. This contradicts the prevailing narrative that Russia was on the brink of collapse.

Lack of Strategic Foresight

The Biden administration’s decision-making process has been characterized by a mix of naive optimism and a lack of strategic foresight. From the outset, the administration clung to the false hope that Ukraine could defeat Russia, disregarding the military realities on the ground.

A prime example is the rejection of Putin’s 2021 proposal for Ukraine’s neutrality in exchange for NATO not including the country in its military structure. This decision was driven by arrogance and a desire to appear tough against Russia, Davis argues.

Missed Opportunities for Peace

When Russian and Ukrainian diplomats reached a peace agreement in Istanbul in March 2022, the Biden administration, influenced by then-British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, pressured Ukraine to reject the agreement and continue fighting.

Overestimating Ukraine and Underestimating Russia

The White House failed to recognize Russia’s overwhelming numerical superiority in terms of soldiers, natural resources, and defense industrial capacity. This miscalculation led to a series of blunders, including the ill-fated Ukrainian offensive in 2023, which lacked essential elements for success, such as air power and sufficient troops.

Unintended Consequences

The Biden administration’s policies have not only failed to weaken Russia but have also strengthened its ties with China, North Korea, and Iran. This formidable geopolitical bloc threatens US interests globally.

A Way Forward

The situation is complex, and the chances of a negotiated solution favorable to Ukraine have been severely diminished. President Trump inherits an extremely challenging situation, and it remains to be seen whether he can undo the damage inflicted by his predecessor and achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.

The reality is that, despite the significant financial and military support provided to Ukraine, the war is far from won. The lack of air superiority on either side has led to massive attrition, with cities being demolished and many civilian casualties.
