US Figure Skating Honors Deceased Athletes in Washington Plane Crash

The United States Federation of Artistic Skating has released a statement acknowledging that 28 of the 60 passengers on the plane that crashed into a helicopter and fell into the Potomac River in Washington belonged to the artistic skating community. They were incredible athletes, supportive relatives, and coaches who worked tirelessly for their athletes. The statement describes them as beloved members of the world skating community, and their loss is deeply regretted.

The victims included 11 skaters between 11 and 16 years old, as well as four coaches, who were identified in a tribute video posted on social media by US Figure Skating. The other 13 members of the skating community who lost their lives were relatives of the skaters. Those who passed away had dedicated their lives to perfecting the sport of artistic skating, with many aiming to become Olympic athletes one day. The statement says that their passion and excellence will inspire and give strength in the coming days, and for now, hearts are sorrowful as they accompany their families and friends in mourning this immense loss.

The interim executive director of US Figure Skating, Samuel Auxier, expressed that the organization will never forget the victims. US Figure Skating has created a fund to support the families affected by the tragedy. Additionally, the organization has received support from the Washington Capitals to pay tribute to the victims at the Capital One Arena on March 2. All proceeds will be used to support the families of the victims.

The accident occurred when American Airlines Flight 5342, which took off from Wichita, Kansas, crashed into the Potomac River after colliding with an army helicopter. The collision happened in the air with a Sikorsky H-60 helicopter during the plane’s approach to the 33rd track of the Reagan National Airport in Washington. There were 60 passengers and four crew members on board, and unfortunately, there were no survivors.
