US, China Leaders to Discuss Trade Issues Soon

Expect a call between US President Donald Trump and China’s President Xi Jinping soon. The US Secretary of the Treasury, Scott Bessent, says they’ll discuss trade issues and essential minerals.

This comes after Trump accused China of breaking their deal to reduce tariffs and trade restrictions on minerals. “What China’s doing is holding up critical supplies to industrial chains in India, Europe,” Bessent said in a CBS interview. “That’s not what a trustworthy partner does.”

Bessent is confident the issues will be resolved after Trump and Xi talk. “Maybe it was a mistake in their system, maybe it was intentional,” he said. “We’ll see after they speak.”

When asked if a call with Xi is on Trump’s schedule, Bessent replied, “I think we’ll see something soon.”

Kevin Hassett, a White House economic advisor, expects Trump to have a “very good conversation” with Xi about trade negotiations this week.
