US Cattlemen Urge Trump to Negotiate South Korea Beef Import Ban Lift

The National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) is urging the Trump administration to push South Korea to lift its ban on importing US beef from cattle aged 30 months or older. This move comes as other Asian countries, including China, Japan, and Taiwan, have already scrapped similar restrictions. The NCBA argues that these countries have come to recognize the safety and quality of US beef, and it’s time for South Korea to follow suit.

In a recent submission to US Trade Representative (USTR) James Cai, the NCBA expressed its concerns about unfair trade practices and called for a review of the current agreement. The USTR had invited comments on “reviewing and identifying unfair trade practices, as well as initiating all necessary actions to address the harm caused by unbalanced agreements.” The NCBA’s request is part of a broader effort to promote science-based trade and eliminate unnecessary barriers to US beef exports.

The age restriction on US beef imports has been in place since 2008, largely due to concerns over Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), also known as mad cow disease. However, the NCBA points out that the US has some of the strictest standards and safeguards in place to prevent the spread of BSE. “We should be negotiating with South Korea to lift the age restriction and promote science-based trade,” the NCBA stated. “This is not just about the US beef industry; it’s about recognizing the high standards and safety protocols we have in place.”

The NCBA also noted that while it understands the sensitivity of the issue in South Korea, it’s essential to address the 30-month restriction. Similar restrictions have already been lifted in China, Japan, and Taiwan, which have all recognized the safety and quality of US beef. By lifting this ban, South Korea can promote a more balanced and science-based trade relationship with the US. As the NCBA emphasized, “We recognize that this is a sensitive issue in South Korea, but it’s one that shouldn’t be overlooked. The fact that other countries have already lifted similar restrictions is a testament to the quality and safety of US beef.”
