US Car Imports Plummet 72% After Trump Tariffs Imposed

Automakers are feeling the pinch after Donald Trump imposed tariffs. A new report shows car imports to the US have plummeted over 70%.

Analysts warned this would happen. Despite car manufacturers trying to keep prices stable, American consumers are starting to feel the effects. According to Automotive News, data from Descartes Datamyne shows a huge drop in car imports. In May, importers received around 3600 units – that’s about 20 feet of cargo space, or roughly one vehicle. This is a significant decrease from last year.

Dealers are waiting for better tax conditions

It’s not just complete cars that are being affected. There’s also been a reduction in car parts and accessories – about 15% less than last year.

Descartes Systems Group, the parent company of Datamyne, says there’s no other explanation for the drop in orders except the impact of Trump’s tariffs.

It’s almost impossible to conclude that this isn’t the impact of tariffs on vehicles showing up in import volumes. My interpretation is that importers are taking a pause, hoping for more favorable tariff conditions in the medium term.

Jackson Wood, director of industrial strategy for global trade at Descartes Systems Group, made this statement. As fewer cars are imported to the US, it’s clear that stocks of cars that arrived before the tariffs are running out. When supply gets low enough, the market may be at the mercy of car sellers, and new car sales could start to struggle.
