The Orleans Parish Prison in New Orleans has been plagued by issues, including faulty cell doors and a shortage of staff. On the day of the escape, there were only 36 guards and 4 supervisors on duty to oversee more than 1,400 inmates. Ten prisoners broke out, leaving behind a mocking message on the wall: “Too Easy LOL” and “WE INNOCENT.” The escapees used a hidden hole behind a toilet in a first-floor cell, which investigators believe couldn’t have been made from the inside.
Manpower Shortage and Inside Help Suspected
The prison’s staffing issues have raised concerns. The female employee monitoring the inmates at the time of the escape had left her post to get food, missing the breakout. Three prison employees have been suspended pending an investigation into possible inside help.
The escaped inmates are wanted for serious crimes, including murder, domestic violence, and burglary. The FBI has offered a $5,000 reward for tips leading to their capture.
Arrests Made
So far, three escapees have been caught. Kendal Miles, 20, was arrested soon after his escape. He had previously escaped from a youth detention center twice. Robert Moody, 21, and Kennan Dennis were also captured on Chef Menteur Highway.
The remaining seven fugitives are:
- Jermaine Donald, 42
- Anton Massey, 33
- Leo Tate, 31
- Lenton Vanburen, 27
- Derrick Grove, 27
- Gary Price, 21
- Corey Boyd, 19
The authorities believe some of the escapees may have left New Orleans or Louisiana. The public is warned to be cautious and report any information.
