US approves drone sale to India for $4 billion

United States (USA) approved this Thursday the Sales of military drones worth 4 billion dollars to India, in a moment of Tensions with China.

The sale, which includes 31 MQ-9B drones, was officially reported to Congress as required by U.S. law, according to a State Department statement.

Congress has not yet given formal approval to the sale of these drones manufactured by General Atomics, but most members of Congress favor closer ties with New Delhi.

The transaction “will enhance India’s ability to respond to current and future threats by enabling it to conduct unmanned surveillance and reconnaissance patrols on maritime routes,” the statement said.

Relations between the two countries have become closer in the last year.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was welcomed to the White House and US President Joe Biden praised the “strong and enduring partnership” between the two countries during a trip to New Delhi for the G20 summit.

India is also a member of the Quad, a security alliance that also includes Australia, Japan and the United States.

Nevertheless, it advocates plurilateralism and cooperates with Russia, which has been marginalized by the West since its invasion of Ukraine. AFP
