Uruguayan Soldier Killed in Congo Incident with Rebels Injured

The Uruguayan National Army has reported a recent incident in the Congo, resulting in the death of a soldier.

Details of the Incident

Soldier 1st Rodolfo Álvarez of the Mechanized Cavalry Squadron Group No. 1 lost his life in this incident. Additionally, several other soldiers were wounded, including Sergeant Adrián Fernández, Private 1st Franco Olivera, Private 1st Elder Píriz, and Corporal 2nd Roque Francia. These injured personnel have received the necessary medical attention.

Security Situation in North Kivu

The Army has noted a deterioration in the security situation in the province of North Kivu due to intensified military operations by the M23 rebel forces. As a result, the ‘Uruguay IV’ Battalion is working to comply with the United Nations mandate and ensure the evacuation of non-essential personnel from the city of Goma.

Measures to Improve Security

To address the challenging conditions, various measures have been taken to enhance the security of the Uruguayan troops operating in the area. The Army has also reported on the occupation of the city of Sake and the ongoing military operations by the Congolese Armed Forces to reclaim the territory from the rebels.
