Uruguayan Lawyer Resigns from Mauvezín Case Amid Threats and Harassment Allegations

The lawyer of Sebastián Mauvezín, Daiana Abracinskas, has decided to leave the case, citing a distorted criminal process and a lack of guarantees for the accused. In a letter titled “guilty without trial, denounced without the right to defense,” Abracinskas presented the reasons for her resignation, which was published on social networks. The defender clarified that her decision to step down is not due to Mauvezín’s innocence, but rather the challenges she faced in ensuring a fair trial.

Resignation and Concerns

Abracinskas expressed her concern about the distortment of the criminal process in the stage prior to the oral trial, where the accused is not given the right to defense. She stated that in Uruguay, it is common for the accused to face threats, aggressions, harassment, and insults, which intimidation tactics aim to deny them their right to a professional defense. Abracinskas emphasized that she believes in Mauvezín’s innocence, but there are limits to her ability to defend him under such circumstances.

Double Standards and False Complaints

The lawyer also highlighted the double standards applied in similar cases, citing the example of Paula Díaz and Romina Celeste, who were involved in a false complaint against Yamandú Orsi. Abracinskas questioned what would have happened if Díaz had not admitted to lying and had instead pursued the complaint further. She pointed out that those who demand the cancellation of a professional for doing their job would likely ask for prudence and silence if they were in a similar situation.

Personal Consequences

Abracinskas concluded her letter by stating that this is not the first time she has faced attacks, but her priority is the peace and well-being of her family. The decision to resign from the case is a result of the challenges she faced in ensuring a fair trial, and the personal risks she and her family have endured.
