The Parliament of Uruguay has recognized this Thursday the responsibility and participation of the State in the deaths of the “April Girls” three women who died during an operation by the Uruguayan Army in 1974, during the dictatorship.
“Faithful to what is established to be done, on behalf of the State we recognize that the State is responsible for the violation of the right to legal personality, to life, and to personal integrity and liberty of the victims in the case. Also for the lack of guarantees and the absence of judicial protection for them, as well as the violation of the right of their relatives to know the truth”, stressed the Uruguayan Vice President, Beatriz Argimón, in statements collected by the Uruguayan newspaper ‘El País’.
Argimón has also agreed to comply with the obligation to investigate the “forced disappearences” of Luis Eduardo González and Oscar Tassino, as well as to adequately investigate, punish and repair all violations of Human Rights linked to these cases.
During the act there have been critics and boos to the president of the country, Luis Lacalle Pou, for having been absent from it.
The “Muchachas de Abril” are Silvia Reyes, Laura Raggio and Diana Maidanik, between the ages of 19 and 21 at the time of their deaths, whose cases have been recognized following a 2021 ruling by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights (IACHR) against the Uruguayan state.
