The Chancellery from Uruguay has expressed its strong support for the United Nations’ condemnation of the M23 movement’s offensive in the Congo. This show of solidarity comes after the UN Security Council unanimously approved a resolution on Friday, which Uruguay backed on Sunday. The resolution specifically addresses the violent offensives in the provinces of North Kivu and South Kivu, calling for an immediate halt to “hostilities” and the withdrawal of the M23 movement from the area.
The UN has also reaffirmed its commitment to the missions in the Congo, emphasizing that any attempts to undermine the mission’s capacity to fulfill its mandate will not be tolerated. In a statement, Uruguay reiterated that there is no military solution to the conflict in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Instead, the country stressed the importance of regional mediation processes, such as those in Nairobi and Luanda, which must be resumed in good faith. Uruguay also emphasized the need for the M23 movement to end its offensive and for the MONUSCO to be able to carry out its mandate without obstruction.
