Up to 250 agents of the Mexican National Guard have been investigated for abuses against women in three years

Hasta 250 agentes de la Guardia Nacional de México han sido investigados por abusos contra mujeres en tres años

Just three years after the creation of the National Guard as the Mexican federal security body, a total of 250 investigations have been opened for abuse of authority and homicide of women by its agents.

According to data from the Internal Affairs Unit of the National Guard consulted by the newspaper ‘Milenio’, between 2019 and 2021 there have been four homicides of women attributed to agents of the body.

The year 2021 has been the year with the highest incidence of these cases of abuse and the most affected states, Chihuahua, Mexico City, Sonora and Tamaulipas.

Among these deaths is that of Jessica Silva, who died during the response of the National Guard to the protests against the La Boquilla dam, in Chihuahua, on September 8, 2020.

Mexico City is the territorial entity with the largest operational deployment (13,112 agents until April 2022) and also the one that concentrates the largest number of investigations for abuse of authority against women: 101 complaints, that is, 40 percent.

They are followed by the State of Mexico with 22, Puebla with 14 and Veracruz and San Luis Potosí with 11 each. In contrast, the National Guard reported that it has no records of the commission of this crime in Aguascalientes, Nayarit and Sonora.
