Unveiling Sujo: Mexico’s 2025 Oscar Bid Shrouded in Mystery

Key Points to Consider

‘Sujo’ is a film directed by Fernanda Valadez and Astrid Rondero, which was a contender for Mexico’s nomination at the 2025 Oscars.

Fernanda Valadez and Astrid Rondero have collaborated once again to create a remarkable film in 2024, titled ‘Sujo’. This film is not only generating significant buzz but also seeking a nomination for Mexico as a Foreign Film at the 2025 Oscars.

The Return of Valadez and Rondero

Valadez and Rondero are the masterminds behind the outstanding film ‘No particular signs’, which garnered numerous national and international awards. Although it did not receive the recognition it deserved as Mexico’s representative for the 2023 awards season, it remains a notable achievement in their filmography.

In 2024, they return with ‘Sujo’, a drama coming-of-age film that triumphed at Sundance with the Grand Jury Prize.

Ultimately, it does not matter how much you try to shield children from a violent environment; its presence is overwhelming, and it can take many forms, always finding new victims.

However, in the face of imminent violence, there is the possibility of a different life. Does this opportunity exist for everyone? Unfortunately not. But if one can make the decision, then there is something that can be done; there is a route that can be followed.

In this context, ‘having a different life’ becomes a privilege, and Sujo takes it, he is saved. The directors do not romanticize this part by making it look like a potential situation or a general context, but rather as an individual circumstance that allows us to glimpse something better for that subject.

The ‘Sujo’ Production Team

We already mentioned that Juan Jesús Varela takes the lead role again after its presentation in Without particular signs. He is accompanied by the smaller version of Sujo with Kevin Uriel Aguilar Luna, Yadira Pérez, Alexis Varela, Jairo Hernández, Karla Garrido, and Susan Lorenzano.

Rondero and Valadez not only directed the film but also wrote and edited it, the latter with Susan Korda. Ximena Amann was in charge of photography, while the Production design was carried out by Belén Estrada. As for the sound design, the person in charge was Omar Juárez Espino, and the Original music was taken by Astrid Rondero herself.

Unfortunately, ‘Sujo’ Was Not Nominated for the 2025 Oscar

Although it was the strong bet of the Mexican academy, this film was not in the shortlist of the Oscars 2025 to the 15 nominees for Best Foreign Film.
