A central defender, St. Juste, now finds himself in a difficult spot. This Friday, he started training with Sporting’s B team. This move happened right after Union Berlin, a German club, pulled out of a deal to sign him. The decision came on the very last day before the transfer market closed.
Horst Heldt, the sports director at Union Berlin, explained why his club changed its mind. He revealed that another defender, Diogo Leite, was the key player in this decision. Leite had made it clear he wanted to leave the club. He even stopped training to avoid getting hurt, hoping a new team would come calling. Heldt mentioned that Leite could still leave, as some transfer windows remain open in other places. He also said there’s a chance Leite might rejoin the first team soon if he doesn’t find a move.
Heldt confirmed that signing St. Juste always depended on Diogo Leite leaving first. Union Berlin had a specific plan: they wanted to keep their squad small and young. Since Diogo Leite didn’t find a new club, Union Berlin decided not to bring in another player. They stuck to their strategy of not expanding the group beyond their initial goal.
This sudden change from the German team certainly had a big impact on St. Juste. Now, in Alvalade, the club still hopes the defender will get an offer from a team in a market that is still open. However, the chances of that happening seem pretty low. St. Juste is reportedly ready for a tough season. He is mentally preparing to stay at Sporting without playing much and then leave for free when the season ends.
