An underdog Portuguese women’s football team is preparing for a challenging cup tie against the five-time national champions, expressing an unexpected belief in their ability to secure an upset victory.
Clube de Albergaria, currently in the Second Division, will host Benfica, last year’s cup finalist, in the third round of the Portuguese Women’s Cup.
Coach Mário Ortiz acknowledged the significant difference in level between the two teams but insisted his squad, from the Aveiro district, has a real chance to win.
Ortiz highlighted playing at home on a synthetic pitch and the anticipated support from their fans as crucial advantages for his team.
He described Benfica as “the team in Portugal with the greatest power,” noting their attacking style primarily through wingers and midfielders.
Clube de Albergaria secured their spot in the third round by defeating Destreza Aventura 6-0 in the previous round.
Ortiz stated his team would maintain their compact defensive approach, keeping lines close together and launching quick transitions.
He emphasized the high motivation and expectations within his squad for the upcoming match.
Clube de Albergaria currently ranks third in the North Series of the Second Division’s first phase.
