UN Accuses Israeli Leaders of Genocidal Rhetoric on Gaza

UN High Commissioner criticizes the rhetoric of Israeli leaders

This Monday, the United Nations’ top human rights official didn’t just blow a whistle. He threw a penalty flag. He accused Israeli leaders of “genocidal rhetoric” concerning the Gaza Strip. The urgent call went out to the international community. They must act to stop a genocide in the Palestinian territory.

Volker Türk, the High Commissioner, spoke at the 60th session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva. “I am horrified,” he stated, “by the open use of genocidal rhetoric.” He added, “The shameful dehumanization of Palestinians by senior Israeli officials is appalling.”

The High Commissioner called for “immediate action.” This action must “put an end to the carnage.” He declared that the international community is simply “failing in its duty.”

“We are failing the people of Gaza,” Türk announced. He challenged, “Where are the decisive measures to prevent genocide? Why aren’t countries doing more to prevent these atrocious crimes?”

“The region cries out for peace,” Türk emphasized. He painted a grim picture: “Gaza is a graveyard.”

This Palestinian territory, besieged by Israel, is devastated. It suffers from hunger, according to the UN. The Israeli army claims a strong lead. They report controlling about 75% of the Gaza Strip. They also claim 40% of Gaza City. The army intends to take Gaza City, the territory’s largest city, located in the north of the enclave.

The Israeli offensive began in the Gaza Strip. It was a response to an attack on Israeli soil. This attack happened on October 7, 2023. The Palestinian Islamist group Hamas carried it out.

Türk listed the deep concerns that “shock the conscience of the world.” These include Israel’s massacres of Palestinian civilians in Gaza. He spoke of indescribable suffering and massive destruction. He noted the blocking of enough humanitarian aid, causing civilian starvation. Also, the killings of journalists, UN staff, and NGO workers. These are war crimes, he concluded.

The High Commissioner pleaded with countries to change the game. He urged them to “stop the flow of arms to Israel.” This risks breaking the laws of war, he warned. They should “exert maximum pressure” for a ceasefire. He also pushed for the release of hostages and arbitrarily detained people. And they must ensure enough humanitarian aid enters Gaza by all available means.

Türk also asked the international community for “decisive measures.” These measures should “oppose Israel’s planned military takeover of Gaza.” They should also stand against “the accelerated annexation of the occupied West Bank.”

Once, after U.S. President Donald Trump took office at the White House, the rules of engagement shifted. Israel, much like the United States, stopped joining the Human Rights Council debates. It was like a team deciding to sit out a crucial part of the season.
