Reasons for Military Command Purges
The practice of purging military commands is a common occurrence in times of war, serving multiple purposes. On one hand, it sends a clear message to all soldiers that they are expected to give their all, whether in combat or in administrative roles. This emphasis on accountability ensures that everyone is committed to the war effort.
Stopping the Chain of Responsibilities
On the other hand, purging allows those in charge to identify scapegoats for failures, halting the chain of responsibilities. This can be done with varying degrees of justification, depending on the circumstances. By doing so, leaders can redirect attention and implement changes to try and turn the tide of the war.
Recent Purges in the Ukrainian Military
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has made several significant changes to the military’s senior command since the Russian invasion began in February 2022. One of the most recent instances occurred this week, with the aim of regaining momentum in the war. This move coincided with significant global events that are likely to influence the conflict’s outcome.
Arrests and Accusations
The State Bureau of Investigation (DBR) and the Security Council of Ukraine (SBU) announced the arrest of several high-ranking officers. These included two generals and a colonel, accused of negligence in defending the Kharkiv area against Russian forces. The charges are severe, alleging that the officers failed to prepare adequate defenses and did not take all possible measures to repel the Russian offensive. This negligence led to significant losses for Ukraine, including personnel, weaponry, and territory.
Other Recent Dismissals
Other notable dismissals include the commander of the 155th ‘Ana of Kyiv’ Brigade, who was accused of attempting to conceal desertions under his command. Lieutenant General Yuri Sodol, former commander of the Joint Forces of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, was relieved of his duties due to accusations of abuse of power and possible collaboration with Russia. The commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Valeri Zaluzhni, was also purged, despite being respected by his soldiers, due to disagreements with the military leadership.
Ministry of Defense Affected
The purges have not been limited to the military; they have also reached the leadership of the Ministry of Defense. Oleksii Reznikov, the former head of the department, was dismissed amidst corruption allegations and a Russian counterattack. He was replaced by Rustem Umerov. More recently, Mykola Oleshchuk, head of the Air Force, was dismissed following the crash of an American-made F-16 fighter during a defense mission. Other significant dismissals include Oleksii Danilov, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council, and Ivan Vinnik, commander of the 72nd Brigade, who played a crucial role in defending Vuhledar, a key city in the Donetsk Oblast.
