Several Ukrainian government websites are down due to a digital attack. The websites of, among others, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Security and Defense Council read a warning in Ukrainian, Russian and Polish: “Be afraid and expect the worst.”

The message warns that all data of Ukrainians has become public, and has been erased from the agencies’ computers. “It’s impossible to recover it.” It is not clear whether that actually happened.

It is unknown who is behind the attack. A foreign ministry spokesman said it was too early to draw conclusions, but told Reuters news agency that Russia was behind previous attacks. Russia has always denied that.

The crisis surrounding Ukraine was the subject of discussion this week between the thirty NATO member states and Russia; those talks were difficult, according to NATO chief executive Stoltenberg. NATO wants Russian soldiers to withdraw at the border. Russia demands, among other things, a guarantee that Ukraine will never join NATO.
