The Ukrainian military has been instructed to cease firing on Russian positions as part of an Easter truce, but to be prepared to respond if attacked. Ukrainian officials say they will match Russia’s actions – if Moscow stops fighting, Kyiv will too. But if Russia keeps attacking, Ukraine will fight back.
A Fragile Ceasefire
The truce was proposed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, who called for a 36-hour ceasefire to coincide with Orthodox Easter. Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy responded cautiously, saying his country would mirror Russia’s actions. “If Russia suddenly becomes fully and unconditionally calm, Ukraine will do the same,” he said. “Silence will be met with silence, and defensive actions will respond to attacks.” Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine has been waiting 39 days for a response to a 30-day ceasefire proposal made by the US, but Russia has ignored it.
Ukraine’s Conditions
Zelenskyy’s statement came after Russian Defense Ministry officials announced the Easter truce would start at 6 pm Moscow time on April 19 and last until midnight on April 20. The Ukrainian president suggested that if the truce is genuine, it should be extended beyond April 20. “Thirty hours is enough for headlines, but not for a real confidence-building measure,” he said. “But 30 days could give a chance for peace.” Ukrainian forces have been ordered to document any violations of the ceasefire and to respond if necessary.
Ongoing Conflict
Despite the truce, fighting continues along the front lines. According to Ukraine’s top military commander, Russian attacks have not decreased, and artillery fire remains intense. Zelenskyy said Moscow’s words are “not credible” and that Ukraine is prepared for all scenarios. “We know how Moscow controls things, and we’re ready for everything,” he said. “The Ukrainian defense forces will act reasonably, responding in kind. Every Russian attack will face an adequate response.”
