Ukraine Confirms F-16, Hero Pilot Lost in Massive Russian Air Strikes

The sky above Ukraine screamed with sirens overnight on June 29, 2025. During a huge assault by Russian forces, Ukraine announced the loss of another F-16 fighter jet and its pilot. This event highlights the intense aerial battles taking place.

The fallen pilot was Maksym Ustymenko. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky quickly praised him. Ustymenko was given the “Hero of Ukraine” award. This is the country’s highest honor. The president spoke about Ustymenko’s long service, saying he had flown combat missions since 2014. That was when Russian-backed groups seized parts of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Ustymenko was a skilled pilot, able to fly four different types of aircraft. His efforts were key in defending Ukraine. “It’s painful to lose someone like him,” Zelensky stated, emphasizing the human cost of the conflict. He also called for more support from the United States and other Western allies. Ukraine needs better air defense systems, especially after such a massive attack.

The Russian strike involved over 500 drones, missiles, and cruise missiles. It caused damage across the country. Homes and important buildings were hit. At least 12 people were hurt. In Kyiv, air raid sirens blared, sending people rushing to shelters. Many found safety in subway stations. Loud gunfire and explosions echoed through the capital. Similar scenes played out in Lviv, a city in the west. The Lviv governor, whose region borders Poland, confirmed that critical infrastructure was a main target.

This marks the third F-16 jet Ukraine has lost since receiving them from allies last year. These F-16s have become a vital part of Ukraine’s air defense strategy. Ukraine keeps quiet about how many F-16s it has.

Details about Ustymenko’s last flight came from the Russian Air Force. They said he used all his F-16’s weapons. He managed to shoot down seven enemy targets in the air. While engaging his seventh target, his jet took heavy damage. It began to lose altitude quickly. Ustymenko tried to steer the failing aircraft away from homes. This brave act meant he ran out of time to eject before the plane crashed.
