UK wants to criminally fight sex conversion therapies

The British government is contemplating creating a criminal offense to fight conversion therapies, which aim to change a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity.

This project will be unveiled this Friday and plans to punish this type of practice with prison terms of up to five years.

The punishment would be applied to those who apply these therapies in any circumstance in minors and also in adults who did not agree to participate in them with full consent and knowledge of their possible effects.

According to the government office on equality, which promotes the project, the criteria on the question of consent will be "solid and rigorous".

It will also be respected, according to this body, "the freedom of an adult to undergo such practices".

The executive will launch a six-week public consultation until December 9 and then prepare a bill, whose approval is scheduled for next spring.

"The hateful practice of coercive conversion therapy should not take place in our society", declared the British Minister of Equality, Liz Truss, who denounced "an archaic practice incompatible with modern life".
