UK: Conservatives lose by-elections triggered after two MPs resign

The constituencies of Wakefield, in the north of England, and Tiverton and Honiton, in the south-west of the country, gave the tenant of 10 Downing Street some cold sweats. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson and his Conservative party suffered, on Friday June 24, two crushing defeats in the by-elections, triggered on Thursday after two resignations by former Conservative MPs, Imran Khan and Neil Parish.

In the constituency of Tiverton and Honiton, conservative since its creation in 1997, the centrist Liberal Democrats overthrew the conservative majority, by more than 6,000 votes. On the side of the constituency of Wakefield, a traditionally Labor stronghold delighted by the Tories in December 2019, it was the Labor Party, the main opposition party, which won by nearly 5,000 votes.

As a reminder, the Wakefield poll was triggered by the resignation of Imran Khan, sentenced to 18 months in prison for the sexual assault of a teenager and that of MP Neil Parish, after admitting that he had watched from the pornography on his phone in Parliament.
