A fresh debate is bubbling up in the UK. Many citizens want to hit large SUVs with higher parking fees. This idea mirrors a move already made in Paris, where voters backed similar charges. The main reasons behind this push are rising emissions, heavier traffic, and increased dangers on city roads.
Over the last two decades, big cars have become far more common. Data from Sky News shows the number of large vehicles in English cities is now ten times what it was twenty years ago. This growth leads to more pollution and makes urban areas harder to navigate. It also increases the risk for people walking or cycling.
In London, for example, SUVs now take up as much space as the entire Kensington and Chelsea district. This comes from research by Clean Cities. This group also points out that SUVs now make up 30% of all new car sales in England. That’s a huge jump, ten times higher than in 2002 or 2003. Many of these vehicles are simply too big for older parking spaces. Even electric SUVs, while cleaner in terms of tailpipe emissions, still use more energy and materials to build and run because of their size.

Making Bigger Cars Pay More
To address these issues, Clean Cities is pushing for UK cities to adopt parking fee structures like Paris. The idea is to discourage people from driving larger cars and to open up more parking spaces. In February 2024, Parisians voted to triple parking fees for vehicles that are bigger, heavier, and pollute more. Over half the voters approved this change.
Oliver Lord, who directs Clean Cities in the UK, believes this is a matter of fairness. He was quoted by a British news outlet saying, “It’s only fair that vehicles which cause more harm should cover a proper portion of the costs society bears.” Lord also highlighted the struggle drivers face when trying to park due to the “concentration of cars.” Meanwhile, he noted, people on foot and bikes face greater risks.
He stressed the importance of taking action. “If we want our cities to be safer for kids and easier for everyone to get around, we need to do something,” Lord stated.
