UEFA will analyze whether to keep the Champions League final in Russia

The European Union of Associated Football (UEFA) called for this Friday an extraordinary meeting of its Executive Committee in which, among other things, the venue for the Champions League final scheduled in Russia will be analysed, after the bombings started this Thursday by that country in Ukraine.

The body chaired by the Slovenian Aleksander Ceferin formalized the call, in which the situation of the teams from both countries in the current European competitions will also be evaluated. “Following the evolution of the situation between Russia and Ukraine, the UEFA president has called an extraordinary meeting of the Executive Committee for Friday 25 February (at 06:00 Argentine time), in order to assess the situation and take all necessary decisions,” reported the Nyon, Switzerland-based entity. “Further communications will be made after the UEFA Executive Committee meeting,” the statement completed.

UEFA, in conjunction with FIFA, is “monitoring the situation” as the escalating crisis between Russia and Ukraine threatens to affect European and international soccer matches to be held in both countries.

The 2021/22 Champions League final, the most significant match in European football at club level, is scheduled for May 28 at the Gazprom Arena in Saint Petersburg. In addition, the situation of Spartak Moscow, already qualified for the round of 16 of the Europa League, and of Zenit Saint Petersburg, will be evaluated in the event that they beat Betis today in the round of 16 of the same competition.
