Ubisoft Cancels Civil War Assassin’s Creed Amid Political Sensitivity, Yasuke Backlash

Imagine an Assassin’s Creed game set during the American Civil War. You’d play as an enslaved Black person in the South. This character escapes bondage, finds the Assassin brotherhood, and then travels back to their homeland to fight for justice. It sounds like a powerful story, doesn’t it? Well, a recent report from Game File, drawing on five anonymous Ubisoft insiders, reveals this compelling project was quietly shelved late in 2024.

Many folks on the development team were really excited about this game. They are understandably disappointed now that it’s gone. Insiders point to two main reasons for the cancellation. First, there was some serious negative feedback regarding the Yasuke character, who will appear in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Shadows. Second, Ubisoft felt uneasy about the increasingly tense political atmosphere in the United States.

PC Gamer added another piece to this complex puzzle. Ubisoft’s own money troubles likely played a part in the decision. The company needed to avoid developing expensive projects. After all, Ubisoft faced many problems last year. Several game projects saw significant delays. Some released titles didn’t quite meet player expectations. By many accounts, 2024 was a really rough year for the publisher.
