Asia Cup U19, India U19 vs Afghanistan U19: India beat Afghanistan to reach the semi-finals
Raj Bawa and Kaushal Tambe sewed an unbroken 65-run position for the seventh wicket when India entered the semifinals of the U19 Asian Cup tournament after recording a four-wicket match over Afghanistan here on Monday. Bawa (43 off) and Tambe (35 off) took over as India battled in 197 for six, but both played well as India set a goal of 260 with 10 balls to spare.
Earlier, fit starter Harnoor Pannu (65) and teammate Angkrish Raghuvanshi (35) got the team off to a good start by adding 104 runs for the first wicket. In the middle order, however, Captain Yash Dul (26) and Nishant Sindhu (19) failed to turn a good start into great scores, after which Bawa and Tambe took over. With this victory, India finished second behind Pakistan in Group A.
Pakistan won all their matches. India will face the winner of the match between Bangladesh and Sri Lanka in the semi-finals. The winner of Tuesday’s match between the two will decide the team to lead Group B. India finished second in their group, thus they will play the first team in the second group in the semi-finals.
After being invited to bat first, Afghanistan scored 259 of four with Suliman Safi’s patient hit of 73 and Ejaz Ahmed Ahmedzai’s unbeaten 86 on 68 balls. Pursuing a challenging goal, India got off to a good start, scoring 44 runs in six overs without losing.
Harnoor and Raghuvanshi constantly carried the ball to the boundary line. Harnoor hit eight fours and Raghuvanshi six fours in his innings. Left arm spinner Noor Ahmed (4 of 43) broke the partnership by firing Raghuvanshi’s leg earlier. Following this, Harnoor and Sheik Rashid (six) also returned to the pavilion, bringing the score to 116 for three.
