Two soldiers die in an operation against smuggling in Bolivia

Bolivian Customs reported this Sunday that in an operation against smuggling in the southern department of Tarija there was an accident that caused the death of two soldiers and left two officials injured.

The incident happened early this Sunday in "one of the roads near the community of Papachacra"about 120 kilometers from the city of Tarija, on the border with Argentina, says a statement from the Bolivian National Customs.

"There was a traffic accident with the unfortunate death of two soldiers from the Strategic Operational Command to Fight Contraband and two customs officers seriously injured, whose situation is reserved."indicates the bulletin.

It is known that the two soldiers are 40 years old and the other is 30 and that one of the wounded is admitted to the San Juan de Dios Hospital in Tarija, in the south of the country, according to local media.

The accident happened when officials "they escorted two motorcycles that transported illegal merchandise"One of the vehicles fled.

The other vehicle was intercepted and they managed to seize the illegal merchandise, according to the statement.

The Customs stated that they are monitoring the health situation of the two wounded and also expressed solidarity with the families of the two deceased soldiers who "They gave their lives in the line of duty".

Smuggling is one of the Main problems at border crossings in the country.

From January to April of this year, different contraband items were seized that are valued at at least 30 million dollars, according to information from the Ministry of Economy.

In addition, this 2022, approximately 3,477 operations against smuggling were carried out and some 904 undocumented vehicles were seized nationwide.

In 2021, the National Customs seized the equivalent of 89.8 million dollars in contraband merchandise, a record figure in the last decade, according to that institution.
