Two Argentinian couples win the Tango World Cup in Buenos Aires

Two Argentinian couples won this Saturday the Tango World Cup held in Buenos Aires (Argentina), in the tango lounge and stage tango categories. The festival was an opportunity to pay tribute to Diego Maradona.

The competition included 800 dancers from 25 countries, who were present but also virtually for some due to restrictions linked to the Covid-19 pandemic. The couple formed by Emmanuel Casal and Yanina Muzyka won in the stage tango category, and the one made up by Agustín Agnez and Bárbara Ferreyra in the lounge tango category.

Reopening of milongas

Songs and dances also paid tribute to Diego Maradona, captain of the Argentina team, world champion in 1986 and considered one of the best players in the history of football. He himself had recorded tango songs as an amateur and liked to practice this dance on the occasion of parties.

This World Cup coincided with the reopening of “milongas”, or tango balls, after 18 months of abstinence. Lounges had been forced to close to avoid Covid-19 infections.
