Twitter lets users buy and sell NFTs through tweets

It’s been a busy week for news from social media platform Twitter. Earlier this week you could read that the platform is working on its own crypto wallet and today is the day that Elon Musk officially became the owner of the social media platform. Yesterday, the development team behind Twitter announced that another new feature is currently being tested. This new feature is also known as ‘NFT Tweet Tiles’.

The new feature makes it possible to add the artwork of a non-fungible token (NFT) in its own panel within a tweet. The readers of the tweet can also be taken directly to the relevant NFT marketplace via a button.

NFT Tweet Tiles is currently supported by four NFT marketplaces: Magic Eden, a cross-platform NFT marketplace protocol, Rarible, Dapper Labs, developer of the Flow blockchain, and Jump.trade, a sports-focused marketplace. Remarkably, OpenSea, the largest NFT marketplace, is not on this list.

A Twitter spokesperson confirmed to Decrypt that the new feature is ‘blockchain agnostic’, which means that all blockchain networks are supported. However, it is therefore a requirement that the NFT marketplace is supported. Also, a ‘Twitter Blue function’, a paid monthly subscription service, would not be a requirement to use the new function.

Twitter and crypto

NFT Tweet Tiles is not Twitter’s first crypto-related feature. Just over a year ago, the bitcoin (BTC) platform launched tipping for users in the United States. This allows users to send bitcoin to each other. At the beginning of 2022, ether (ETH) was also added to the list of cryptocurrencies with which you can donate on the platform. Earlier this year, Twitter also ensured that you can use an NFT as a profile picture in the field of NFTs. To round out the list, Jane Manchun Wong, technology blogger and app researcher, indicated this week that the company is working on a wallet prototype. Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk is unlikely to put the brakes on crypto adoption.
