Tutu’s wife, Leah, is in the company of the couple’s four children, grandchildren and other family members.

“Mommy is holding on … She is surrounded by love,” her daughter Nontombi Tutu told The Associated Press in front of the family home in the Milnerton area of ​​Cape Town.

“At a time like this, there are times when we laugh and share stories, and others when we cry as we accept life without dad,” he added.

“He still has not completely left us, and yet he has already left us. So as a family we support each other, ”he commented. “We love each other, we fight with each other, like families do. And we feel the love and support of people across the country and around the world. “

The time during which Tutu will lie in the burning chapel at St. George’s Anglican Cathedral in Cape Town has been extended by two days, Thursday and Friday, to allow all mourners to pay their respects in front of his coffin, the Desmond Tutu Trust announced Tuesday.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that Saturday’s Tutu Mass for the Dead will be a special category 1 official funeral. His ashes will then be placed in the cathedral mausoleum, as instructed by Tutu.

“The archbishop was very clear in his wishes for his funeral. I didn’t want any glitz or lavish expenses, ”the Desmond Tutu Trust said in a statement. “He asked that the coffin be the cheapest possible and that a bouquet of carnations from his family be the only flowers in the cathedral.”
