Turkish Football Scandal: 371 Referees Have Betting Accounts

Turkish football faces a significant crisis of integrity after its national federation revealed that hundreds of professional referees hold betting accounts, with many actively placing wagers.

The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) announced that 371 out of 571 referees officiating in the country’s professional leagues possess accounts with sports betting companies. Among these, 152 are actively engaged in placing bets.

The scandal’s scope extends to elite levels, involving 7 principal referees and 15 assistant referees from top-tier competitions.

One unnamed referee has reportedly placed more than 18,000 bets, while 42 other officials have made over 1,000 bets each. This highlights the extensive nature of the betting activities uncovered.

TFF President Ibrahim Haciosmanoglu made the announcement Monday, stating the federation’s disciplinary committee would take immediate and necessary actions.

Under the TFF Disciplinary Regulations, referees found in violation can face suspensions ranging from three months to one year.

Furthermore, the FIFA Code of Ethics explicitly prohibits all football participants from direct or indirect involvement in betting, casino games, lotteries, or similar activities related to football matches or competitions.

An investigation into the matter by the Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office has been underway since April.

The TFF has not yet disclosed whether any referees placed bets on matches they personally officiated. Such a finding would suggest potential match-fixing and could lead to much more severe penalties.
