Turkey defeats Romania 1-0 in World Cup qualifying playoff

Turkey defeated Romania 1-0 in Istanbul on Thursday night. The win sends them to the UEFA World Cup qualifying playoff final. This high-stakes knockout fixture stems directly from FIFA expanding the 2026 tournament to 48 teams. That massive format change forced European nations into a brutal 16-team bracket to claim the final four tickets. Turkey survived.

Ferdi Kadıoğlu scored the decisive goal in the 52nd minute. Real Madrid midfielder Arda Güler delivered a perfectly weighted through-ball to set up the strike at Tüpraş Stadium. Romania nearly equalized late. Nicolae Stanciu fired a shot that hit the post in the 78th minute. The final whistle cemented Turkey’s victory and eliminated Romania from World Cup contention in one of the week’s biggest international sports broadcasts.

The victory pushes Turkey into the Path C final scheduled for March 31. They will face either Kosovo or Slovakia. Whoever wins that upcoming match secures a ticket to North America. The victor joins Group D alongside the United States, Paraguay, and Australia.

The loss carries heavy historical weight for Romania. It denies 80-year-old manager Mircea Lucescu the opportunity to coach at the World Cup. Lucescu previously managed the Turkish national team. He also captained Romania during the 1970 World Cup. Following this elimination, he is widely expected to retire.
