Turkey approves Sweden's entry into NATO after 20 months of blockade

The Turkish parliament gave the “green light” this Tuesday to Sweden's accession protocol to NATO. This paves the way for the Scandinavian country to join the defense alliance and leaves the final decision on its accession to Hungary, which has not yet given its consent.

Specifically, the protocol was adopted with 287 votes in favor, while 55 MPs voted against after Parliament postponed the vote in November, according to broadcaster TRT Haber.

Last October, President Erdogan sent the question of Sweden joining NATO to the Turkish parliament to end a process that began during the Madrid summit in 2022 with the help of Finland.

The Turkish authorities have repeatedly pointed out its presence Sweden's pro-Kurdish movements, particularly with regard to any support for the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK)which Ankara considers a terrorist organization.

In addition, in recent months there have been several incidents on Swedish territory related to the burning of copies of the Koran, the holy book of Islam, as well as against the person of President Erdogan himself.
