Turkey 6.1 Earthquake: One Dead, 29 Injured, Buildings Collapse

An earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale shook Turkey, killing 1 person and injuring 29, after dozens of houses collapsed.
A sudden 6.1 magnitude earthquake rattled Turkey’s northwestern Balıkesir province. The ground shook violently, impacting numerous areas, including the sprawling city of Istanbul. Tragically, one person died, and nearly 30 others suffered injuries. Local reports confirmed that 16 buildings were damaged or collapsed.

The powerful tremor hit late on August 10, 2025, at 7:53 PM local time. Its effects spread far beyond Balıkesir. People felt the shaking across many provinces, a testament to the quake’s intensity. News outlet Reuters quickly picked up the story.

Experts measured the earthquake’s depth. Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) reported it was about 11 kilometers below the surface. Meanwhile, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ) put the depth slightly shallower, at 10 kilometers. Both agencies, however, agreed on the 6.1 magnitude.

Turkey’s Interior Minister, Ali Yerlikaya, shared the grim details. The single fatality was an 81-year-old man. He passed away after rescue teams pulled him from the rubble. In total, 29 people needed medical attention. Rescue operations have now concluded. No one else remains missing. The immediate focus is on aiding the injured and assessing the damage to the structures.
