Tua Tagovailoa considered retiring after concussions

Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins quarterbacksuffered two concussions during the 2022 NFL season and at a press conference stated that this caused him to consider retiring.

I think I did consider (retirement). I sat down with my family, with my wife, and we had those conversations,” Tagovailoa said. “It would be hard for me to walk away from the game because of my age.. I always dreamed of playing as long as possible and for my son to know that he was watching his dad play.”

Diagnosis of the first lesionduring Week 3 against the Bills, it was a back problem. However, the NFLPA investigated the medical procedure and fired the neurologist who treated Tagovailoa.

A week later, the Dolphins medical team took him out of the Cincinnati Bengals stadium after suffering a head and neck injury which was later diagnosed as a concussion.

The second concussion he suffered in Week 16, against the Green Bay Packers, and the Miami staff considered it appropriate to rule him out for the rest of the season. With this in consideration, Tagovailoa assured that staying as an active player is the best decision.

It is my health, it is my body and I believe that this is the best for me and my family.”, assured the Dolphins QB. “I love football, if I didn’t I would have quit a long time ago.”

Tua learned to fall so as not to get injured

Tagovailoa also stated that since the offseason you have learned how to fall properly and protect your head from injury.

“It is better than one thinks, to learn to fall. You train it, you work on it and it becomes second nature,” Tua said. “You think it’s easy to fall and not hit your head. We try to fall and protect the jaw, it is a technique to distribute your energy when you fall”.

The Alabama graduate finished the season with 3,548 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions after completing 64.8 percent of his shots. Tagovailoa was sacked 21 times by opposing defenses.
