Greek Stefanos Tsitsipas, 23 and fourth in the ATP world rankings, is dissatisfied with the decision that, for now, Serbian Novak Djokovic will participate in the Australian Open, despite not having been vaccinated against the coronavirus. The last finalist at Roland Garros considered that the number one in the world passed all other tennis players as “stupid”.

“It makes us look stupid … nobody thought you could come to Australia without getting vaccinated and without taking the protocols into account. It really takes a lot of courage to do it anyway and put participation in a Grand Slam tournament at risk. It is certainly something that almost no one could do, “Tsitsipas said in an interview published by the Italian daily Gazetta dello Sport.

When asked whether the Serbian should be able to play the Australian Open, Tsitsipas was blunt: “There are two points of view: on the one hand, almost all the players are completely covered by the vaccine and followed the rules, the other is that Djokovic He has preferred to go his own way and make a fool of others. “

According to the latest data published by the ATP, there are 97 players in the top 100 in the ranking who completed the vaccination scheme against the coronavirus, while only three, including Djokovic, did not.

The Greek will make his debut at the Oceanic Open, which will begin next Monday in Melbourne, against the Swede Mikael Ymer, 82nd. on the ATP ladder. Tsitsipas reached the semi-final in Australia twice, in 2019 he lost to Spanish Rafael Nadal while in 2021 he lost to Russian Daniil Medvedev. According to the draw that was known this Thursday, he could only meet Djokovic in an eventual final.
