Trump’s Proposal
Trump took to his Truth Social social network to express his thoughts on the matter. He stated that many Canadians would welcome the opportunity to join the United States, citing the benefits of reduced tariffs and taxes, as well as increased safety from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships.
Trump’s comments were made in response to Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s announcement of his resignation. Trump claimed that Trudeau was aware of the potential benefits of Canada joining the United States and had therefore decided to step down.
Background to the Proposal
Trump first expressed his idea of Canada integrating into the United States during a dinner with Trudeau at Mar-a-Lago in Florida on November 29. The meeting was held amidst tensions between the two countries over trade and immigration.
Trump had threatened to impose 25% tariffs on goods from Canada and Mexico if they did not take action to stop the flow of migrants and drugs into the United States. Trudeau’s visit to Mar-a-Lago was an attempt to persuade Trump not to implement these measures.
