Trump emphasized that his statement was a personal one, adding that “Israel can do what they consider” appropriate in response to the situation. He also left open the possibility that the United States could be involved in the response if Hamas does not complete the release of hostages initiated in January as part of a ceasefire plan.
Hamas’ Response
The Islamist group Hamas responded to Trump’s statement by saying that “the door is still open for the exchange” of Israeli hostages by Palestinians, which is scheduled for February 15. However, Hamas emphasized that this exchange is conditional upon Israel meeting the deadlines and requirements agreed upon in the ceasefire agreement.
Hamas cited several reasons for delaying what would be the sixth exchange of hostages, including violations committed by the Israeli government, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
