The talk around TikTok’s future in the United States just got a lot more interesting. Former President Donald Trump recently shared some big news. He told Fox News on June 29 that a group of very wealthy people wants to buy the popular video app. Trump believes these buyers will reveal themselves in the next two weeks.
This isn’t a simple handshake deal, though. The entire sale needs a green light from the Chinese government. Trump sounded optimistic about this. He thinks Chinese President Xi Jinping will approve the deal. This is notable because the U.S. has already pushed back the TikTok ban deadline three times.
Things were trickier before. When the U.S. put higher taxes on Chinese imports, it made the TikTok deal harder to imagine. Back then, China’s government said no to any sale. That was until the U.S. eased up on those tax policies later on.
The most recent delay for TikTok happened in early June. That pushed the ban deadline to September 17. This ongoing drama happens despite a law passed by Congress last year. That law requires ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell its U.S. operations. If they don’t, TikTok could be banned across the country.
