US to halt Yemen airstrikes after Houthi rebels agree to cease Red Sea attacks, Donald Trump says.
The Houthis have been attacking ships in the Red Sea, claiming they are showing solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza under Israeli attack since October 2023.
This started after Hamas launched a major assault on Israel.
At least two cargo ships have sunk, one was seized, and four crew members were killed.
Houthi Attacks on Shipping
The attacks have forced shipping companies to change their route, affecting global trade.
President Joe Biden (at the time) ordered airstrikes on the Houthis in Yemen, and they increased under President Trump.
The US military says it has hit over 1,000 targets in Yemen in recent months.
Trump’s Statement
The US will stop bombing the Houthis because they have agreed to stop attacking ships.
Trump said this at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House.
“We will honor that,” Trump said.
The Houthis told the US they won’t attack ships anymore.
Trump said, “They just don’t want to fight, and we will honor that.”
He added, “They won’t blow up ships anymore.”
