The scoreboard showed 2-3 at the final whistle, a hard-fought win for Portugal against Hungary in their World Cup 2026 qualifier. Coming off the bench in the second half, Francisco Trincão played a key part in helping the national team grab those crucial points. After the match, Trincão spoke about the victory’s importance and his role on the field that day.

Speaking with RTP, Trincão noted the game turned out tougher than expected. He explained, “We knew it would be a difficult match. They’re a team that plays with a lot of long balls and goes for second balls.” He added that Hungary is a good side, making the win even more satisfying. “It ended up being a tough game because they are a good team, but we managed to win, which is exactly what you need in these kinds of matches,” Trincão stated.

The Hungarian tactics pushed Portugal to their physical limits. Trincão confirmed this, saying, “They played very long passes, so we had to control that part of the game.” He believed the team managed this for most of the match. “In the end, it got a little complicated,” he admitted, “but we are a great team, and we believed until the very end.” He repeated this sentiment to Canal 11, noting, “We knew they were different from Armenia, who also played with long balls. We believed until the end and won the game fair and square.”

This victory marked two wins in two away games for Portugal, a perfect start to the qualifying campaign. Trincão highlighted this achievement, “That was our goal.” Looking ahead, he was optimistic about the upcoming matches. “Now we have two home games,” he said. “It’s about securing our qualification spot.” He shared similar thoughts with Canal 11, remarking, “It’s still early, but as I said: these were two away games, so it was important to win them. With our fans, it will be different.” He later told Sport TV that having their supporters at home would make things “completely different.”

When asked about finding his place within the squad, Trincão showed his humble approach. “I count myself like everyone else; I try to do my part, one more person helping out,” he told RTP. He hopes to be an even bigger help in the future. He added to Sport TV, “It’s great, as always. I do what I love, and I’m with great players. It’s an honor to be here and be able to help and represent Portugal.”

His instructions upon entering the field were clear and tactical. He elaborated to Canal 11 on his specific duties, saying, “My job was to link up well with Cancelo, both wide and through the middle. I had to hold onto the ball, keep possession, and attack at the right moment.” This patient approach was key, as he explained further: “It’s about going to one side, making three or four passes, then going to the other side, and waiting for the right moment. We knew that as they tired, it would become easier, and we believed that until the end.”

For Trincão and the Portuguese squad, the two away wins set a strong foundation. The team is now ready to face their next challenges at home, fueled by their fans.
