Tragic Boxing Death Sparks Questions Over Fighter Safety Measures

Tragic Loss in the Boxing World

A devastating incident has shaken the boxing community, as Tanzanian professional boxer Hassan Mgaya lost his life due to injuries sustained during a fight. The 29-year-old boxer passed away on December 30, 2024, after being knocked out by his compatriot Paul Elias on December 27.

The Fateful Fight

The evening, held at the Dunia Ndogo Hall in Dar-Es-Salaam, was marked by intense action and pace. In the fifth round, Mgaya received a series of blows to the head, leaving him unconscious. He suffered a blockage in his airway, partially preventing him from breathing, and immediately received first aid in the ring.

Desperate Efforts to Save Mgaya

Initially, Mgaya was transferred to the Palestine Hospital in Sinza, but due to the severity of his condition, he was later moved to the Mwananyamala Hospital. As his situation worsened on December 28, he was taken to the Muhimbili National Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

A Promising Career Cut Short

Mgaya had a career record of 3-4-2, with the fight against Elias being his second stoppage loss. This was his fourth fight of the year. Sadly, Mgaya’s passing marks the second Tanzanian boxer to lose their life in similar circumstances within a month, following the death of Abbasi Mselem in November 2024.

Tributes and Condolences

The acting secretary of the Tanzania Boxing Commission, Nsajigwa Mwangamilo, expressed his sorrow over Mgaya’s passing, offering condolences to the family and the boxing community. The Tanzania Boxers Association has stated that the evening met all safety requirements.
